A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Iran's northeastern Kashmar on Tuesday at 1:24 pm (0954 GMT).
Casualties and Injuries
The quake resulted in at least four deaths and 120 injuries. Kashmar's governor, Hajatollah Shariatmadari, shared this information on state television and also highlighted the impact and ongoing rescue efforts.
Damage and Rescue Efforts
Thirty-five people were hospitalised due to the quake. The earthquake mostly damaged old buildings in Kashmar's urban and rural areas. State television showed footage of first responders working in a street where all buildings had turned to rubble.
Geological Information
The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake hit at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles).
Iran's History of Earthquakes
Iran is located on various tectonic plates, causing frequent earthquakes. Early last year, a 5.9 magnitude quake in northwestern Iran killed three people and injured over 800 near the Turkey border. In 2003, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in the southeastern city of Bam resulted in over 31,000 deaths, making it one of the world's deadliest disasters.
