It was a heartbreaking end to a sensational innings by Devdutt Padikkal, who was given out after a controversial decision knocked him off the mark just short of reaching his double century.

The left-hander hit an incredible 199 to put India A in a commanding position, however he fell just after with noticeable frustration on his face.

The innings was impressive and backed up by some vital contributions from his team-mates.

Padikkal questions decision

Padikkal was on 199 when he was given out after being caught behind off Gibson. The delivery looked to have been bowled down the leg side as Padikkal tried to manipulate the ball down the leg.

The ball appeared to miss and hit the pads before being taken by wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay. New Zealand A appealed and Brad Wilson was quick to raise his finger. Padikkal clearly did not agree with the decision and turned to the umpire with a clear sign of what he wanted to say.

The ball had clearly gone well outside his bat. He went on to stay at the crease for a short amount of time, looking quite deflated. This meant he would not be able to hit a double century.

India A in commanding position

A sensational 199 from Padikkal put India in a commanding position. He was supported well by Sai Sudharsan Yash Rathod and Washington Sundar, all hitting half centuries.

This helped India A bounce back and build up a large first innings total. It showed how deep the visiting side are and how they can get partnerships going.

However, it was definitely a talking point with Padikkal falling at such a high score. His near double century was the standout performance of the day.

India A in commanding position

India A ended Day 3 on 488/8. Washington Sundar was still not out on 51 and Akash Deep was yet to get off the mark on 0 not out. They had 2 wickets in hand and with such a large lead they are in a commanding position going into the final day of play.

Although Padikkal fell at 199, he put together a great innings and has put them in a great position to push for a good score.
