Mumbai Indians are bidding farewell to the disappointing IPL 2026 campaign with a five-time champion franchise and head coach Mahela Jayawardene mutually deciding to part ways. The franchise is said to have shortlisted a few candidates ahead of the new season which has been marred in only four wins so far.

A Poor Season Sets Off a Coaching Change

Mumbai Indians have had a challenging campaign ahead of an IPL 2026, having finished ninth after a host of injuries, player availability issues and reported dressing-room discontent. The poor results have set off a coaching change as the Mumbai-based franchise looks to restore its title credentials.

As per reports in the media, Mumbai Indians have shortlisted a few candidates for the head coach position which will be filled in the coming week. Jayawardene is said to have been unlikely to continue with the franchise in any capacity.

The coaching change marks the end of a long-standing alliance between the former Sri Lanka skipper and Mumbai franchise.

Three IPL Cups Have Been Made by Jayawardene

Jayawardene took charge of Mumbai Indians for their head coach post for the first time in 2017, and steered them to titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020. The three consecutive domestic cricket honours also added to his stature as one of the most successful coaches in Mumbai Indians history.

He was to step down from the head coach role in 2022 to become the franchise's global head of performance which he retained till 2024. He was responsible for coaching, scouting and planning across the Mumbai Indians' global operations.

Jayawardene rejoined as head coach with the franchise in a two plus one-year deal in 2024. The team made the playoffs in 2025, but stumbled to a ninth-place finish in the IPL 2026.

Jayawardene and Nita Ambani Reflect on Association

Jayawardene spoke of Mumbai Indians as a special chapter in his career, thanking the players, coaching staff and fans for making his journey fulfilling. He also thanked owner Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust and friendship saying he'll always cherish his time with Mumbai Indians.

Nita Ambani also thanked Jayawardene for his contributions, lauding his calmness and honesty. She said Jayawardene would always be part of the Mumbai Indians family and wished him well for the years to come.

Mumbai Indians Look to Move On

With the coaching post changing hands, Mumbai Indians are set for a crucial decision ahead of the next IPL season. The franchise will hope their efforts will bring about a turnaround and help them back into the title race.
