India pulled off a stunning record chase against New Zealand in Christchurch to not only put on a show for the fans, but to prove the team management that there is no need to change their opening duo despite teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting to be given another opportunity.

Chasing down 226 at Hagley Oval on Thursday, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma dismantled the New Zealand bowling attack from the off and put India on a path to victory. The pair posted a 93-run stand from 35 balls as they looked to set up a comfortable win. Ultimately, India reached the target in 19.4 overs, equaling their highest ever successful T20I chase.

Samson and Abhishek Get the Job Done

Samson was the aggressor in the duo's successful opening stand as he smashed a magnificent 67 from 33 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, before Abhishek added 29 from 12 deliveries. Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir got the job done from there.

Samson later revealed that he and Abhishek look to take the game away from the opposition during the Powerplay when they get a flying start.

With Samson and Abhishek combining for 235 runs from their previous six T20I partnerships at a strike rate of 197.5, and the latter posting 174 at 177.6 for the same number of innings, the duo may have been shaky at times, but at least one always comes through with a big score.

Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Must Be Patient

The performances have seen captain Shreyas Iyer stand by his opening pair despite the prospect of the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stepping into the squad at some point soon after his impressive IPL 2026 outing earned him an international call-up, with Sooryavanshi also impressing on the recent Zimbabwe tour with scores of 50 and 81 to his name.

Samson himself is a testament to this as he was dropped from the squad and endured a difficult spell before launching a stunning T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with 321 runs at a strike rate of 199.37 and Player of the Tournament honors.

India Take Their Time to Explore Options

With the next T20 World Cup not until 2028, India have enough time to explore their options without disrupting what has proven to be a successful opening stand.

Sooryavanshi's opportunity will come, but for now, Samson and Abhishek have earned the right to continue in their roles as they continue to prove themselves, potential or otherwise.
