Can you hoist the national flag at home?

Yes. Members of the public, private organisations and educational institutions may display or hoist the national flag on all days and occasions provided its dignity and honour are maintained.That is, the Tricolour people can display on Independence Day in their homes and handle it properly.

Can the flag be flown at night?

When displayed in the open or on the house of a member of the public, the national flag may be flown during both day and night.The flag should, however, always be displayed respectfully and in a manner that maintains its dignity.

Flag Hoisting Dos and Don’ts

Dos

  • Use a flag made from permitted materials.
  • Make sure the flag is clean and in good condition.
  • Display the national flag in a prominent and respectful position.
  • Ensure that the saffron band is at the top when the flag is displayed horizontally.
  • Handle the Tricolour carefully and respectfully.
  • Make sure the flag does not touch the ground or floor.

Don’ts

  • Do not hoist the national flag upside down. The saffron band should never be at the bottom.
  • Do not allow the flag to touch the ground or floor.
  • Do not allow the flag to trail in water.
  • Do not use a damaged, torn or dishevelled flag.
  • Do not write anything on the national flag.
  • Do not dip the national flag in salute to any person or object.
  • Do not fly it from the same masthead at the same time as another flag.
  • Do not use the national flag to cover a speaker's desk or drape it over a speaker's platform.
  • Do not use the Tricolour as part of a costume, uniform or accessory worn below the waist.
  • Do not print or embroider the national flag on items such as handkerchiefs, napkins, cushions, undergarments or other dress materials.
