The Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved a proposal to rename the upcoming Jewar airport in Noida as Narendra Modi International Airport ahead of the state Assembly elections scheduled to take place in 2027.
The proposal follows a state Cabinet meeting, where Adityanath explained, during a press briefing, a decision to rename the airport after five years since the renaming of Ahmedabad's Motera cricket stadium, which was renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium, in 2021.
The first phase of the Jewar airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year and four phases of expansion are proposed as part of its development.
Cabinet Resolutions Celebrate Modi's Completion of 25 Years in Public Service
A congratulatory resolution was passed at the Cabinet level to celebrate Modi's completion of 25 years in public service.
During his explanation of the state's achievements, Adityanath recalled that Uttar Pradesh had pursued the principle of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas through implementing welfare initiatives targeting farmers, women, young people and marginalised communities.
The Chief Minister cited several initiatives at the centre that he mentioned while reviewing welfare schemes, including PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.
More than Rs 1 lakh crore had been transferred to over three crore farmers in Uttar Pradesh under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, he added.
Adityanath also noted that more than 65 lakh poor families had received houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and approximately 15 crore people in the state were being provided with free food grains under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
The Chief Minister also cited the coverage of healthcare, with over 9.9 crore people having health coverage through Ayushman cards.
Development of Infrastructure Projects Demonstrated in Speech
He highlighted the development of infrastructure projects, including the national highways, metro networks and Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat train as examples of the state's development.
Adityanath referred to the airport project, saying that Uttar Pradesh was expanding its air connectivity.
He also highlighted the state's defence industrial corridor, the PM MITRA Textile Park and freight connectivity projects as important components of its industrial development strategy.
The proposed renaming of the airport places it at the centre of a major state government announcement ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The airport is expected to play a significant role in improving connectivity in the National Capital Region and supporting industrial development and economic activity in western Uttar Pradesh through the development of its planned phases.
