The reported incidents were bomb threats, online threats, stalking and harassment of some football players during the tournament.

Bomb Threat Reportedly Mentioned Messi

One of the most serious incidents occurred before Argentina's June 28 match against Jordan in Texas.

According to the police dossier, a man contacted Dallas airport and claimed he was traveling towards the stadium. He allegedly claimed to be carrying homemade bombs and a firearm.

The caller allegedly threatened police officers and players from both teams and even mentioned Messi.

The threat was taken seriously by the authorities and the team and stadium were assessed for security risk.

Another Threat Made During Argentina Match

Messi faced another serious online threat during Argentina's July 7 match against Egypt in Atlanta.

According to the reported police document, an X user claimed they were entering the stadium and threatened to attack Messi with explosives.

Meanwhile, police also received another call that explosives had been placed inside trash containers at the stadium, a police report said.

After the reports, security teams conducted extensive searches, the report said. Explosive specialists, canine teams and K-9 units were involved in the security operation, he said.

No attack on Messi was reported.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Mbappe also targeted

Messi was not the only big football player who had security issues at the 2026 World Cup.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was also harassed during the tournament, the report said. It also reported one person was arrested attempting to get information about Ronaldo's accommodation in Houston.

Another incident involved a fan trying to enter an elevator with Ronaldo in Canada.

France star Kylian Mbappe also faced abuse during the tournament. He was apparently the target of xenophobic comments after a clash with Paraguay's goalkeeper.

Paraguay fans also reportedly burned an effigy of Mbappe after France eliminated Paraguay from the competition.

Referee also received thousands of messages

The threats and harassment were reported to go beyond players.

French referee Francois Letexier received more than 6,000 messages on his personal WhatsApp after Egypt's defeat to Argentina in a controversial Round of 16 match.

The large number of messages apparently followed criticism of decisions made during the game.

Other players were also targeted after incidents on the field.

Norwegian forward Alexander Sorloth and his wife also received threats after he missed a scoring opportunity. Colombian player Jaminton Campaz and French defender Lucas Digne were also threatened after their respective matches.

FBI Helped Monitor Security Threats.

According to the police dossier, the security incidents were monitored by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in cooperation with the International Police Cooperation Center (IPCC).

The IPCC also brought together US federal agencies and law enforcement authorities from the countries participating in the tournament, it said.

Their work ranged from identifying possible terrorism threats, warning players of threats against players, crowd-related incidents and security issues.

The incidents expose the huge security problems that a world football tournament may present to its millions of fans, players and officials in stadiums and public places.
