Dhaka[Bangladesh] February 13: Why is the new government raising this demand again? Because the party that won the election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, had promised action earlier also. Senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed they will formally request India to send back Sheikh Hasina. He said it will happen through legal channels between both governments. He stated the foreign ministry already took steps. Supporters online commented that the party is only doing what it promised voters. Critics asked if this will create tension with India?

Where Is Hasina And What Case Does She Face?

Where is she staying now? She has been living in New Delhi for a long time & she left Bangladesh after protests in August 2024. Since then she is living here. Reports say a tribunal in Dhaka sentenced her to death in absentia in November 2025 & the charges relate to violent action during protests. She has stayed mostly out of public view. Some sightings were reported at Lodhi Garden. In January 2026 she spoke from Delhi and asked people in Bangladesh to rise against the interim government. That speech caused sharp reactions. Social media users wrote that her message sounded political even from exile.

What Triggered Her Exit From Power?

How did she lose power? In mid 2024 student protests began against job quota rules. The protests spread across the country. Crowds gathered near her residence. Security forces tried to control the unrest. Reports claimed many deaths during the crackdown. Pressure kept rising. On August 5, 2024 she left the country by military helicopter. Since then Bangladesh has been run by an interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Protesters accused her government of harsh rule. Her supporters claimed she was removed unfairly. Online debates still continue about who was right?

How Is India Responding To The Demand?

Will India send her back? Officials have not decided yet. India’s foreign ministry said the request was received earlier and is being reviewed through legal and internal processes. That means no quick action. India also said it wants peace and stability in Bangladesh. Analysts note India must balance diplomacy and law. Some commentators posted that extradition could affect relations. Others wrote that legal treaties must be respected. Diplomats say talks between both sides will decide the next step.

What Does BNP Say About India Relations?

Is BNP against India? Party leaders say no & they claim they want friendly ties with all neighbours. They say relations should be based on equality and mutual respect. Salahuddin Ahmed repeated this point after the election win. He said Bangladesh wants cooperation with India but on equal footing. Political observers say this tone is softer than earlier BNP statements from past years. Some citizens commented that practical relations matter more than old rivalries. Others questioned whether words will match actions after power settles.
