Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka appeared before the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court on Friday, two days after their release from judicial custody in the Jantar Mantar trespassing case.

The court had asked the duo to appear personally with sureties before it after their release on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Delhi Police's verification report questioned the residential address documents submitted by Das.

Police Verification Report Flags Missing Address Proof

As per the verification report of the police, Das had not submitted any document to prove and corroborate his residential address in Delhi. The court has asked him to submit a verifiable document in the next hearing on November 17.

Before heading to the police station, Das spoke to the media and said along with his legal advisor, the CJP's legal affairs head Ratna Singh, and was asked if they would approach the High Court.

"We will see what happens here," said Das.

CJP Leaders Skip Crime Branch Summonses

The SEM court hearing comes after CJP leaders skipped appearing before the Delhi Police Crime Branch on Thursday after being summoned to give statements in two cases.

A senior police officer said notices were also sent to CJP member Ajinkya Shinde.

"We had given them extra time, but they did not turn up. They had approached us saying they would not be able to appear before the Crime Branch. Now we will issue fresh notices to them," said the officer.

What Prompted Das and Ranka's Arrest?

The trouble started for the CJP leaders on October 13 after they, along with around 10 other party members, were said to have pried open an iron gate and entered the Jantar Mantar area which had been de-notified as a protest site.

While the other CJP members were released within 24 hours, Das and Ranka were arrested for not adhering to a bond they had signed on October 11, which included a pledge to keep the peace for a year.

The judicial custody of the CJP leaders was extended as the court expressed "concern" over the conduct of Das and Ranka and the sureties given by their advocates.

'No Protests at Jantar Mantar until it is re-notified'

The leaders were released on Wednesday after they gave written undertaking not to call for any protest at Jantar Mantar till the time it is re-notified as an authorized protest site.

In their undertakings, the CJP leaders also said they would maintain peace and not violate law and order, adding that future protests, if any, would be within the bounds of the Constitution.

Now the next hearing of the case is set to happen on November 17 and the Crime Branch probe is also ongoing against the CJP leaders.
