New Delhi (India) March 18:In a recent escalation of violence, Israel targeted a building in Bashoura, a neighborhood in central Beirut, resulting in a blast and a plume of smoke rising from the area. This attack came shortly after Israel had issued an evacuation warning for the region.
On Wednesday, Israeli bombings across Lebanon tragically claimed the lives of over 20 people and left many more injured, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health. These airstrikes spanned from the capital to southern and eastern Lebanon, marking a devastating wave of violence.

Beirut Targeted Near Key Offices

Bashoura is adjacent to Beirut's commercial center, where numerous large companies and government institutions are located, as well as residential buildings and food outlets. The strikes targeted the heart of Beirut, an area where Hezbollah's influence is relatively limited. Notably, the site of the attack is near several ministries, including that of Social Justice. Rescue operations are currently ongoing, as the aftermath of the attack unfolds.

UN Slams Attacks as Potential War Crime

A spokesperson from the United Nations human rights office underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that deliberately targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure constitutes a war crime. He also indicated that Israel's extensive military operations in southern Lebanon might violate international law and may result in ‘war crime’.
Israel's army reported that it had initiated what it described as limited ground operations in southern Lebanon. Residents of four towns near the Zahrani River and Tyre area received evacuation warnings, urging them to leave immediately and head north.

Lebanon President Holds Security Meet

Amidst these rising tensions, Lebanon's president convened a high-level security meeting on Wednesday to address the intensifying Israeli attacks and the increasing number of refugees throughout the country. The presidency announced that the meeting, led by President Aoun, focused on national security developments, including the growing casualties and the displacement of the population.
Israel has been relentless in its bombardment, carrying out heavy strikes in various Lebanese areas and consistently targeting Beirut's center, sometimes with little to no warning.

912 Dead in Lebanon Amid Middle East Crisis

The airstrike in Beirut is part of a broader series of attacks in the capital, where multiple sites were targeted with smaller munitions aimed at specific apartments within residential buildings.
Lebanon became embroiled in the ongoing Middle East conflict on March 2, when the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel following deadly strikes that killed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Since the onset of Israel’s attacks on March 2, the violence has resulted in at least 912 deaths in Lebanon, including 111 children, with more than 2,200 others wounded.
