Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva re-election should help give a new breath to relations between Brazil and India, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating him on Monday and expressing "confidence that our diverse India-Brazil Strategic Partnership will grow."
Lula’s second term also will provide continuity to the growing relationship between the two emerging economies seeking to diversify their markets.

Modi said in his congratulatory message on social media that he was "happy to work with Lula da Silva to strengthen our collaboration. We can together work for a more inclusive, just and sustainable world."
This reflects how aligned the two nations are with regards to reforming multilateral organizations.
Lula, who missed the BRICS Summit hosted in India last month to campaign for his election, said "Brazilian citizens have written history by mobilizing themselves in the streets and going to vote."
Lula’s victory over Flavio Bolsonaro, right-wing senator and son of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, comes amid great political division throughout South America.
Lula’s return to power means New Delhi can work to continue the coordination between the two nations through groups like BRICS.
Economic Opportunities
The economic relationship between India and Brazil has become increasingly important as trade tensions emerge worldwide.
After the United States placed 50% tariffs on both nations in 2025, Modi and Lula spoke about boosting collaboration between the two nations in areas such as trade, energy, defense and technology. Lula later travelled to India with a large business delegation.
Both nations have targeted increasing trade between them to $30 billion by 2030. Brazil also has significant rare earth resources meaning they can work with India to diversify supply chains.
India can look to Brazil to help them diversify away from China which they currently rely on for rare earths, which are key for clean energy, infrastructure and high-tech manufacturing. Deals can be done between the two nations in rare earths and mining.
Defense, Tech and a Changing World Order
Brazil could also benefit from India’s expertise in defense manufacturing, space technology and digitization. India will also gain a strong foothold in Latin America.
Both nations have emphasized the importance of multilateralism in today’s uncertain world. Lula’s re-election gives both nations an opportunity to utilize their diplomatic alignment.
Whether this will happen will depend on how much is actually done, however the political continuity in Brasilia gives New Delhi an opportunity to further strengthen their partnership with Brazil which is becoming increasingly economically and strategically important.
