Prime Minister Narendra Modi will call on Canada on December 11-12, 2026, as New Delhi and Ottawa work to bolster bilateral relations and economic cooperation. The visit follows a phone call between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which was announced by the High Commission of India in Ottawa on Friday.
Both men agreed to build on the positive momentum in bilateral ties and pursue concrete outcomes in areas ranging from trade, energy, technology and security to people-to-people exchanges.
In a post on X, the High Commission confirmed the dates of the trip and said the leaders had committed to strengthening cooperation. Modi also described his conversation with Carney as warm and productive, and reasserted the importance of the India-Canada strategic partnership.
India and Canada Look to Advance CEPA Talks
According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister's Office, the leaders affirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) as soon as possible. They believe that the deal would help them achieve their shared goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
Both sides also expressed enthusiasm for the Team Canada Trade Mission to India led by Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu. The envoy of about 300 business representatives is looking into commercial opportunities in key sectors.
They also welcomed the visit of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to New Delhi.
Energy, Technology and Security on the Agenda
During their discussions Modi and Carney noted the opportunities to bolster cooperation in energy, technology, investment and security as well as geopolitical instability in the Indo-Pacific and the need for reliable partners in energy and agriculture.
Carney thanked Modi for leading efforts to find a peaceful solution to Russia's war on Ukraine. The leaders agreed to maintain close contact ahead of the Indian prime minister's visit to Canada.
Canadian Foreign Minister Meets Modi and Jaishankar
Anand had earlier met Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Wednesday. They discussed trade, investment, security, energy, technology and people-to-people exchanges.
Following her meeting with Modi Anand said that India and Canada could build a prosperous future together and that they had long-standing connections with each other, thanks to nearly eight decades of diplomatic relations as well as families, students and entrepreneurs.
Anand said progress had been made in trade negotiations as well as cooperation in energy, innovation and security since her last meeting with Jaishankar a year ago. The visit is expected to provide another opportunity for both countries to build on their efforts and strategic partnership.
