25 August 2023, Mumbai: In a move towards greener mobility, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced plans to introduce a 100% ethanol-fueled variant of Toyota’s popular Innova car on August 29. Gadkari, who has been advocating for automakers to embrace alternative fuel-powered and environmentally friendly vehicles, previously launched a hydrogen-powered car, the Toyota Mirai EV, last year. The upcoming launch of the ethanol-based Innova marks a significant step towards reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.
Niting Will launch the ethanol-powered Innova
Addressing the Mint Sustainability Summit, Gadkari revealed his intention to launch the ethanol-powered Innova, positioning it as the world’s first BS-VI (Stage-II) electrified flex-fuel vehicle. This innovative step aligns with his longstanding interest in biofuels, dating back to 2004 when he explored the potential of biofuels in Brazil following a surge in petrol prices in India. His vision is rooted in the belief that biofuels can not only reduce petroleum imports but also contribute to making India self-reliant and ecologically responsible.
Pollution Challenge The Country Faces
Gadkari emphasized the pressing need for India to adopt more sustainable practices due to the significant pollution challenge the country faces. He stressed that the nation must intensify its efforts to combat air and water pollution, safeguard the environment, and enhance the quality of its rivers. With a resolute focus on curbing pollution and promoting cleaner energy sources, Gadkari reiterated the importance of reducing India’s dependency on oil imports, which currently amounts to a substantial financial burden on the economy.
Upcoming Projects
As part of his commitment to transforming India’s transportation infrastructure, Gadkari highlighted the imminent completion of various road projects valued at Rs 65,000 crore by the year’s end. These projects include the construction of the much-awaited Dwarka Expressway, an essential component of the country’s expanding road network. Gadkari also addressed the harmful implications of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, linking them to health issues like cancer. He advocated for the adoption of organic farming practices, not only for their potential to generate wealth but also for their positive impact on sustainability and environmental health.
Goal Of Self Sufficient India
Gadkari’s proactive approach extends to waste management as well. He emphasized the need to educate citizens about converting waste into valuable resources, thereby contributing to a circular economy. In his vision, this approach aligns with the goal of making India more self-sufficient and ecologically resilient.
Furthermore, Gadkari expressed optimism about the potential reduction in logistic costs, anticipating a decrease from the current 14-16% to just 9% with the expansion of the country’s highway network. His multifaceted approach, encompassing alternative fuels, sustainable practices, and efficient logistics, underscores his commitment to advancing India’s position as a leader in green mobility and environmental responsibility.
