K Armstrong, Bahujan Samaj Party’s Tamil Nadu President, was hacked to death near his residence in Perambur, northern Chennai on Friday, July 5. Tension has gripped across Chennai upon the BSP chief’s murder, with supporters protesting and demanding arrests and a CBI inquiry on the matter. Following this, a total of eight suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the murder case. K Armstrong was a known voice of the Dalit and also served as a Ward Councillor of the Greater Chennai cooperation in 2006.

Armstrong Attacked By Six Men Near His Residence In Perambur

K Armstrong was attacked by an unidentified mob of six people on three bikes near his house in Perambur and was hacked to death. Armstrong was speaking to his friends near his residence at around 7:30 PM when the attack happened. He was rushed to a private hospital and reportedly suffered many injuries on his head and neck. The Chennai Police then registered a case of murder and arranged a special team to track the suspects. The entire locality of the chief’s residence has been bought under a security blanket by the police. Both the opposition and allies have been left in shock since the incident.

Shops Closed And Buses Halted Amid Protests

On Saturday, July 6, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers took to the streets and rallied outside the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital mortuary. Party leaders and supporters held a ‘road roko’ protest to demand justice along with attempts to breach the police barricades. Many of the protests and demands were directed towards Chief Minister M K Stalin, concerning accountability and resignation. Amid the chaos, many shops were closed, and MTC buses were halted. Police forces and officers have been deployed at the site of protests.

Mayawati, M K Stalin And Rahul Gandhi Reacted To The Incident

The Chennai police made the eight arrests based on mobile tower locations and bike registration numbers after carefully reviewing the CCTV footage of the area. The arrested individuals are identified as Rammu, Polai Bala, Thiruvengadam, Thirumalai, Selvaraj, Manivannan, Santhosh, and Arul. They are said to belong to the Kuravar community. Several ministers including, BSP chief Mayawati, CM M K Stalin, and Rahul Gandhi have expressed their shock and condolences upon the murder of K Armstrong.
