In a recent development regarding the tragic case of a trainee doctor’s murder in Kolkata, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not included the charge of “gang rape” in its remand note. Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect, has been accused of the crime, but the investigation so far only points to him as the sole perpetrator. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court in Sealdah has placed Roy under 14 days of judicial custody.
Initial Police Report
Initially, the Kolkata Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on August 9. The case was then handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, which continued with the same charges. Despite early speculations, the CBI has so far not mentioned additional charges related to gang rape.
Sanjay Roy’s Custody
Roy, who was detained by Kolkata Police a day after the crime, is currently the only individual arrested in connection with the case. The CBI’s investigation, which began on August 13, has found no other suspects. The court’s decision to remand Roy indicates that he is being investigated alone for this crime.
Investigation Progress
The CBI has been scrutinizing the case following orders from the Calcutta High Court. Although the CBI has not included gang rape charges, it remains possible that additional sections may be applied as the investigation unfolds. The agency has stated that evidence and documents from the Kolkata Police were transferred to them for further inquiry.
Allegations of Tampering
There have been concerns about the tampering of evidence, with reports suggesting alterations to the crime scene. The CBI had informed the Supreme Court on August 22 that the crime scene was indeed altered. However, the state government has denied these allegations. Video footage circulating on social media showing a crowd in the seminar hall has added to the confusion, though Kolkata Police maintain that the area was properly secured.
Roy’s Claims
During court proceedings, Sanjay Roy has claimed that he is being framed for the crime. His assertion of innocence contradicts the ongoing investigation and evidence collected by the authorities. The case continues to attract public and legal scrutiny as new details emerge.
