23rd March, Mumbai: Sushmita Sen’s fitness is an inspiration to many. So the news of her sudden heart attack shocked everyone. Her fans breathed a sigh of relief when she recovered. Not just the actor and former Miss Universe, many of her industry colleagues too suffered from the same and some of them succumbed to it. The names include the likes of Sidharth Shukla, KK, Satish Kaushik, Raj Kaushal, Raju Shrivastava, Puneet Rajkumar and Siddhaanth Vir Surryavanshi. Many are of the opinion that over-fitness consciousness, and dieting are some of the root causes. Dr Akash Sharma, who is also a fitness expert, speaks on the issue.

“In today’s time, people are getting heart attacks at a young age, mostly actors. I believe they forget to pay attention to the amount of workouts they do to keep themselves in shape as per the demands of the work and also due to a lot of competition. There is always tension in their lives. The gym and overfit consciousness is certainly taking a toll on his heart and overall health as strenuous exertion increases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest .There are some important reasons for this about which it is important to know. Being a professional athlete I pay a lot of attention to these things. And I think young or old people doing gym or sports should also pay attention to a few things,” he says.

Sharma then highlights what needs to be focused upon. “Firstly, although regular exercise helps strengthen the heart and lowers the risk of cardiovascular problems long-term, strenuous exertion does increase the immediate risk of heart attack because Intense exercise can increase heart rate, blood pressure and adrenaline hormone levels, which can lead to a plaque rupture, precipitating a heart attack. Secondly, dehydration can also increase the risk of a heart attack in adults. As lack of water thickens your blood and makes your blood vessels constrict, over time it can strain your heart. This can cause plaque build-up and blockage in the arteries and can cause problems. Also take care of this hyperhidrosis , loss of body water from the body through sweating because extra sweating causes electrolyte losses of sodium and potassium. These minerals are easily replaced through proper nutrition. If there is a deficiency of electrolyte in the body, then there is a possibility of cramp and strain of any muscle in the body. And mainly the heart is actually a muscular organ,” he adds.

People who have diabetes should take special care, according to the doctor. They don’t know when they are suffering from a heart attack because they don’t feel about this indication, for example, cramp or pain.

“To avoid dehydration, I drink plenty of water and take electrolytes. I pay a lot of attention to my heart rate while working out because we get more excited during workout and our dopamine hormones increase due to which we don’t pay attention to the heart rate. I am a professional athlete, so when my heart rate increases, I can control it by brain because for this I do it two to three times a week or often after exercise. Mindfulness, meditation and yoga and I always check my blood pressure regularly, do my lipid profile between an ECG and Echo. I take good supplements for a healthy heart. It mainly contains Omega 3 flaxseed oil and Adaptogens, vitamin B, iron, magnesium CoQ10. There are some supplements that also act as blood thinners, curcumin, and black paper,” he ends.
