3rd June 2023, Mumbai: National Cancer Survivors Day 2023: Embrace a healthy lifestyle by focusing on a nutrient-rich diet and stay well hydrated.
Winning the cancer battle demands tremendous resilience and fortitude. The road is fraught with difficulties, from the moment of diagnosis to the different treatments that alter the direction of one’s life. Whether it’s dealing with uncertainty or dealing with the many side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the disease puts your patience to the test at every turn. Survivors, on the other hand, frequently state that fighting the disease against all odds has made them stronger emotionally and mentally. They also value each day of their lives more than before. Every year on June 4, National Cancer Survivors Day is marked to honour the brave people who overcame the disease through strength and enthusiasm.
Dr. Anil D’cruz, Director of Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre, believes that cancer survivors can make healthy lifestyle adjustments.
1. Lead a healthy lifestyle
Adopt a healthy lifestyle by eating a nutrient-rich diet and staying hydrated. Limit your intake of processed meals and sugary drinks. Regularly engage in physical activities that your physical condition allows, progressively increasing intensity in cooperation with your doctor.
2. Give priority to self care
Make stress management practises a priority to improve your general well-being. Find relaxing and unwinding activities, such as deep breathing techniques, meditation, yoga, or participating in hobbies. Balancing work, family, and self-care is critical for lowering stress and cultivating a good mindset. Make time to prioritise your personal requirements. Make sure you receive enough rest and quality sleep to recharge your body and mind. Surround yourself with good individuals and loved ones who understand where you’re coming from.
3. Regular follow-ups
Regular check-ups with your doctor are critical for monitoring your health and treating any treatment-related complications or concerns. Attend these appointments on time and report any new symptoms or changes you detect openly. These checkups allow for the early diagnosis of any potential recurrence or new health conditions, allowing for appropriate intervention if necessary.
4. Learn more about cancer
Educate yourself about your specific type of cancer, potential long-term side effects of treatment, and recommended lifestyle modifications. This knowledge empowers you to actively participate in your own health decisions and advocate for your well-being.
5. Avoid cancer risks
Continue to prioritize prevention. Adhere to recommended cancer screenings for early detection, as well as screenings for other types of cancer as appropriate for your age and risk factors. Maintain routine vaccinations and adopt strategies to reduce the risk of secondary cancers, such as avoiding tobacco and excessive sun exposure.
