India has been on a successful streak of homeland wins in the test series since 2012. Indian team managed not to lose any test series they played on home soil. Sadly, the streak ended on Saturday, as New Zealand won the second test series by 113 runs in Pune.
The first series was on Dhoni’s side when the team lost the match to England in the 2012 season. Now Rohit Sharma bears the loss of the second series on his side in 2024. This loss broke the landmark of India’s unbeaten test run at home since 2004 played against Australia Border -Gavaskar Trophy win.
Remarkably, this is New Zealand’s first test series win in India and fourth win across 38 tests in India. New Zealand marked his first test series win in India in 69 years since 1955. This is the first win for the team in India which was after 26 years. New Zealand won two tests in 1959 and 1988.
Santer’s played a crucial role in the triumph of New Zealand. The orthodox left-hand spinner of New Zealand, Mitchell Santer took 13 wickets in the match with his spin technique. Indian team failed to defend the spin bowling of Santer leading them to lose the match.
In the first innings, Santer took seven wickets. In the second innings, he took six more and bowled out India at 245 in 60.2 overs, chasing 359 runs of New Zealand. Except for Yashasvi Jaiswal (77) and Ravindra Jadeja (42) of the Indian team, none were able to bat against Santer’s spin bowling.
Even captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were pitched out for just 8 and 17 runs respectively eventually lost to a wicket from Santer. The worst wicket was towards Rishabh Pant who got run out for a duck after a mixup in the middle with Kohli. Going forward Santer finished the innings with 6/104 and ended up with 13/157 figures.
Ajaz Patel took 2 wickets for 43 while Glenn Philips got one more wicket. By the end of day three New Zealand was already 301 runs ahead at 198/5 and only managed to score 57 more runs as Jadeja dismissed three wickets in the first session.
