Post Lok Sabha elections, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joins Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the first foreign leader to make a state visit since the new government took office,  in a meeting at the Hyderabad House, New Delhi on Saturday, June 22. Both leaders unveiled a series of joint initiatives and agreements based on mutual growth and regional cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi in a statement says that Bangladesh is situated at the confluence of our Neighborhood First Policy, Act East Policy, Vision Sagar, and Indo-Pacific Vision. In the past year, the nations have cooperated along various important projects, including the beginning of trading the Indian currency among the nations. On the Ganges river between Bangladesh and India, the world’s longest river cruise has been successfully established. Alongside this, the first cross-border friendship pipeline between India and Bangladesh has been accomplished.

In the discussion, a few points were India’s and Bangladesh’s vision for a ‘green partnership’ and a blue economy. The two nations agreed to cooperate in the areas of digital domain, maritime sphere, and railway connectivity. PM Modi mentioned that India will facilitate an ‘e-medical visa facility’ for Bangladeshi citizens seeking medical treatment in India.

Defence Ties And Collaboration Against Counter-Terrorism

Furthermore, detailed discussions were held around defense production and the modernization of armed forces in light of strengthening defense ties. The two nations agreed to cooperate over public welfare, counter-terrorism, fundamentalism, and peaceful management of the border. PM Modi welcomed Bangladesh to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. Moreover, PM Modi mentioned that the two nations are currently emphasizing connectivity, commerce, and collaboration. Sheikh Hasina appreciated India’s efforts and role as a major neighbor.
