24th March, Mumbai: Kannada actor Chetan Kumar has been granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 25,000 in a case related to his alleged derogatory remarks against Hindutva. The actor was arrested on March 22 for his tweets that allegedly hurt religious sentiments.

The actor had tweeted about the  political developments in the country and criticised the Hindutva ideology. His comments were seen as offensive by some sections of society, leading to a police complaint against him.

The actor has since deleted the controversial tweets and apologised for any hurt he may have caused. He also clarified that his comments were not intended to hurt anyone’s religious sentiments but were meant as a critique of certain political ideologies.

The incident has sparked a debate on the freedom of speech and expression in India, with many expressing concern over the increasing intolerance towards dissenting voices.

The actor was remanded to a 14-day judicial custody by a court in Bengaluru after he posted a tweet stating that “lies form the foundation of Hindutva”.

In a tweet that caused controversy, he stated, “Savarkar claimed that the Indian ‘nation’ started when Rama defeated Ravana and returned to Ayodhya, which is untrue. The assertion that the Babri Masjid is the ‘birthplace of Rama’ in 1992 is also false. Furthermore, the statement that Urigowda-Nanjegowda are the ‘killers’ of Tipu in 2023 is another falsehood. The ideology of Hindutva can only be overcome with the truth, which is equality.”
