Jhansi Hospital Fire: Parents Demand DNA Tests for Missing Babies
Late Friday Night Tragedy at Jhansi’s NICU Sparks Outcry
Late on Friday night, a fire broke out in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, claiming the lives of 10 newborns. The fire left parents and relatives in anguish, searching for their babies amidst the chaos. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about safety measures and the identification process of the deceased.
Brave Rescuers Amid the Flames
Three brave individuals—Kuldeep Sikarwar, Rani Sen, and Sitara Devi—risked their lives to save at least five newborns from the fire. Kuldeep, a new father, suffered burns while rescuing babies but remains uncertain about the fate of his own child. Rani and Sitara also admitted rescued babies to hospitals but are now demanding DNA tests to confirm the identities of the deceased.
Painful Wait for Missing Babies
Parents like Kuldeep are still searching for their children. “I brought out five babies, but I can’t find my own child,” said Kuldeep, whose wife is unconscious from the shock. For many families, the absence of clear answers has deepened the trauma of losing their babies.
Confusion in Baby Identification
Amidst the turmoil, questions about the identification of the charred bodies have arisen. Families claim that methods like using paper tags tied to babies’ toes are unreliable, given the condition of the bodies. “Everything was burned beyond recognition,” Rani Sen stated, expressing her frustration at the lack of transparency.
Calls for DNA Testing
The affected families, including Sitara Devi, are united in their demand for DNA tests to ensure proper identification. “We need clear answers and the assurance that we’re not being misled,” she said. DNA testing, though time-consuming, could provide the certainty that these grieving families desperately seek.
Government's Response
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak assured families that efforts were underway to identify the remaining babies. He mentioned that DNA testing would be considered if required. So far, seven babies have been identified and their bodies handed over, but three remain unidentified.
A Mother’s Plea for Justice
Among the grieving parents is a mother who had prayed for years to have a child, only to face this tragedy. “This is not just about my child. It’s about ensuring no other parent goes through this pain,” she said, urging the authorities to act swiftly.
Searching for Answers and Accountability
Families have accused the administration of failing to provide timely updates. They allege that efforts to locate the missing babies are inadequate. The demand for a thorough investigation and immediate improvements in hospital safety standards is growing louder.
