Essential Supplies to the Rescue
The people of Manipur have been facing strict curfew restrictions, but there is a small window of relief. Authorities have relaxed the curfew in five districts — Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal. From 5 AM to 12 noon on Thursday, residents can step out to buy essentials like medicines and food.
Temporary Curfew Relaxations Bring Hope
On Wednesday, a similar relaxation allowed movement from 5 AM to 10 AM. It witnessed a rush of people ensuring they stocked up on daily necessities. The additional district magistrate of Imphal West stated that this decision was necessary to facilitate the purchase of essentials while maintaining peace in the region.
Strict Guidelines Still in Place
Even though the curfew is eased for a few hours, strict rules are being followed. Gatherings, protests, or rallies without prior approval are still prohibited. Movement for critical services such as health, electricity, banking, and media has been exempted from the curfew altogether. Essential service workers and those traveling to the airport are allowed free movement beyond relaxation hours.
Internet Suspension Continues
Adding to the challenges, the state government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services in seven districts for three more days. This step aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain peace. Initially imposed on November 16, the internet ban has been extended multiple times to curb anti-social activities.
Schools Remain Closed
Schools in curfew-affected areas have remained shut since November 16. The education department is yet to issue orders on whether this closure will continue. Parents and students are waiting for updates as the situation unfolds.
The Backdrop of Tensions
The curfew was first imposed due to protests after the discovery of six missing civilians' bodies, including women and children. These incidents followed an encounter between security forces and militants. The government has been on high alert, ensuring the safety of citizens while addressing public concerns.
