Recently, in a tragic incident, three IAS aspirants lost their lives due to flooding at a coaching center’s basement in Delhi’s Old Rajendra Nagar. The incident happened at Rau’s IAS Study Centre amidst heavy rain in the area. A criminal case was registered following the incident where two individuals responsible were detained. The three students were identified as Tanya Soni (25), Shreya Yadav (25), and Nevin Delvin (28).
Atishi Promises Swift Action In The Matter
This incident has sparked protests by the enraged students who attributed the inadequate safety measures leading to the three deaths. Delhi Minister Atishi ordered a magistrate inquiry into the matter and promised swift action to be taken. In a recent development regarding the incident, the Municipal Corporation Of Delhi (MCD) has sealed at least 13 ‘illegal’ coaching centers in Delhi’s Old Rajendra Nagar after the drowning of the three aspirants.
13 Illegal Coaching Centers Sealed
The action by the civic body involved the sealing of coaching centers including IAS Gurukul, Chahal Academy, Plutus Academy, Sai Trading, IAS Setu, Topper’s Academy, Dainik Samvad, Civils Daily IAS, Career Power, 99 Notes, Vidya Guru, Guidance IAS, and Easy for IAS. Reportedly, three of these coaching centers were operating in basements as a violation of established rules and were sealed on the spot.
Owner And Coordinator Of The Coaching Center Arrested
The Rau’s IAS Study Circle, where the flooding happened, has already been sealed by the police. Furthermore, the owner and the coordinator of the coaching center have also been arrested and charged with culpable homicide. The basement of the coaching center was being used as a library in violation of the rules. Several other students were allegedly trapped inside due to flooding and were rescued after a seven-hour-long rescue operation at the site. While the locals blame the poor drainage system as the cause of the flooding, a police probe is still investigating the reason behind the flooding.
Basement Was Marked For Parking And Household Shortage
Upon rigorous investigation, multiple lapses were discovered on the part of the coaching center’s owner and the civic authorities. The coaching center issued the No-objection certificate from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in August 2021 and the certificate clearly states that the basement would be used for parking and household storage. Rau’s IAS Study Circle Center also got an NOC from the fire department earlier this month. It also mentioned multiple exit ways at the center, but the coaching center only has one entry and exit way.
