In a tragic incident, a 62-year-old man named M. Ali Khan who was traveling on a train from Thrissur to New Delhi, died after the berth on the train above collapsed on him. The incident happened on June 16, after which Ali Khan was admitted to the hospital for more than a week. He later died on Monday after being kept in the hospital. M. Khali Khan hails from Ponnani in Malappuram, Kerala. He had been working as an LIC agent.

Khan Was Accompanying Friend On A Journey To Jalandhar

Ali Khan and his friend Muhammed boarded the Millenium Superfast Express (Ernakulam-Hazrat-Nizamuddin) on the night of June 15. After the accident, his elder brother Backer informed that the two were heading to Jalandhar. Muhammed wanted Khan to accompany him while he visited his daughter in Jalandhar where she was a college student. The two also planned on visiting Delhi and Agra during their journey, before they reached Jalandhar.

Ali Khan Was Provided Medical Assistance At Warangal Station, Severe Injuries Reported

The accident took place on the evening of June 16. Muhammed informed that while Ali was on the lower berth, the upper berth came apart and collapsed on Ali Khan, slamming against his neck, while the train was passing through Telangana. Co-passengers reported that Ali Khan was rushed to a hospital in Warangal in Telangana, following which he was shifted to another hospital the next day in Hyderabad where he went through a major surgery on Saturday. After being taken to the hospital, severe injuries were reported with a fracture in three neck bones. He was also paralyzed from the accident. Despite his surgery and medical efforts, he died on Monday. His body was taken to his native place, Ponnani where his funeral was held on Wednesday.

Authorities Cite Improper Chaining As The Cause Of The Accident, Ponnani MP Demands Investigation

Khan’s brother Backer said that the Railway police have registered a case in the wake of the tragic incident. As per information received from the TTE, Ali Khan was at seat 57 of the S6 coach. Railway authorities later clarified that the accident occurred due to improper chaining of the seat of the upper berth by the passenger. The seat was then checked upon at the Nizamuddin station where it was found to be okay with no damages done. Moreover, Ponnani’s MP Abdussamad Samadani wrote to the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw requesting an investigation to be done on the matter, along with a minimum ex gratia for Khan’s family. The incident has already sparked concern for many passengers.
