After the NCW’s complaint, Delhi Police filed an FIR against the TMC MP after she made a derogatory comment on X
A case under the new criminal laws has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra by the special cell of the Delhi Police. This came after the National Commission of Women (NCW) initiated legal action against Mahua Moitra on Friday, July 5.
Mahua Moitra Replies To An X User With A Crude Comment
The complaint was lodged to the Delhi Police after Mahua Moitra replied to a video on X where the NCW chief appeared at the stampede site in Hathras, Up. Many X users replied pointing out why a man was needed to hold the umbrella over her head when she could do it herself. TMC MP Moitra replied to the comment saying, “She is too busy holding up her boss’ pajamas”. She later deleted the comment. The NCW reacted immediately claiming that her remarks were derogatory and offensive, before they filed for an FIR on July 5.
Moitra Challenges Delhi Police To Make A Quick Arrest
Following the FIR registered upon the NCW’s complaint to the Delhi Police, Mahua Moitra challenged the Delhi Police to act immediately on suo moto orders. She mentioned she was in Nadia if they needed her in the next three days to make a quick arrest, further saying, “I can hold my own umbrella”, taking a dig at chief Rekha Sharma. Rekha Sharma responded to the comment by calling Mahua Moitra a ‘troll’ and saying she does not have time for work but for trolling. The NCW stated that these remarks are not only outrageous but are also a severe violation of women’s rights to dignity.
NCW States That The Case Falls Under Section 70 Of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
Upon meticulous observation of the matter, the commission filed the FIR claiming that Moitra’s remarks fall under section 79 of the new criminal law Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which translates as word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman. NCW chief Rekha Sharma has also written to the Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla mentioning the incident and requesting him to take appropriate action against Mahua Moitra.
