1st November 2023, Mumbai: The Haryana government has launched a crackdown on the counterfeit liquor business in the state, in response to a report by HT. Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala has ordered the formation of special teams to address the issue, which involves the rebottling and sale of fake premium alcohol in Gurugram and Faridabad.

Booming Racket in Counterfeit Liquor Trade

The counterfeit liquor trade involves traders buying used, high-end liquor bottles from scrap dealers. They then fill these bottles with cheap whisky, replace labels and caps, seal them, and sell them to vendors, shops, and bars. This illegal operation has been on the rise, as reported by HT.

Government’s Swift Response

Shortly after the report was published, Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, who also serves as the state excise and taxation minister, expressed the government’s commitment to combat the sale of fake liquor. He emphasized that action will be taken against liquor companies if their products are found in shops.

Responsibility of Liquor Brands

Chautala pointed out that it is the responsibility of liquor brands to monitor their sales and collect samples for testing. Brands are also liable for ensuring that the dispatch of their consignments complies with hologram and batch number requirements. Any irregularities may lead to legal actions against the brands.

Efforts to Eradicate Counterfeit Liquor

Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav confirmed that the state government’s orders will be implemented immediately. Inspections have already begun at outlets and liquor shops, with a focus on checking holograms, batch numbers, and label authenticity. Additionally, used liquor bottles will be properly disposed of, and efforts are being made to identify a third party for lab tests to confirm the authenticity of alcohol products. The government is determined to curb the illicit counterfeit liquor trade.
