Ireland defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets and a ball to spare to go up 1-0 in the 3 match T20 series to be played in Ireland. The Irish thoroughly deserved the win with clinical performances in all three departments. Pakistan could not get going with the bat and ended up with a score of 182 that was 10 under par. In the field, their worries continued with fumbles and drops. The biggest blunder came when Iftikhar Ahmed stepped on the boundary cushions while taking a catch of George Dockrell converting a wicket to a six at a crucial moment in the game.
After the match, Ireland were elated for causing a massive upset and beating Pakistan while Pakistan cricket fans were dejected by their team’s performance. The team faced severe trolling from Indians and Pakistanis on social media for their performance in the match. Babar Azam in particular was targeted for his captaincy and batting in the match. The fans were not happy with their team’s performance.
The teams will face each other again on April 12 in the second match of the series at the same venue.
Both the teams will also travel to USA and Windies for the T20 World Cup in June.
After the match Babar Azam, the Pakistan captain said, “ I think we started no good, in the first 6 overs, the pitch is two-paced. But we recovered very well, 190 is a par score and we lost in the bowling and fielding. We did not execute our plans, few sloppy fielding, had we taken that catch... That's why they win because they attack us.”
The Irish captain Paul Stirling said, “We are absolutely delighted, we wanted to start the summer off well and it was almost a perfect day for us. When you come here, especially from Pakistan, the flattest pitches in the world, ask them to bat first and see what they can get. 170 was OK but we leaked a few, but we were happy to chase 180. Brilliant knock from Balbirnie, he got through the powerplay and picked up the pace later on as well. He timed it to perfection, it was a fantastic knock. We have had great games here especially against Pakistan and to get over the line today is brilliant.”
This loss has further increased the worries of Pakistan in the shortest format where they are ranked 7th.
