PM Memorial Urges Rahul Gandhi to Help Return Nehru’s Letters
PM Memorial urges Rahul Gandhi to help return Nehru’s important historical letters.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] December 16 : The Prime Minister's Museum and Library (PMML) Society has reached out to Rahul Gandhi, urging him to help return valuable historical letters of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
These letters were removed from the museum’s public access in 2008 under the direction of Sonia Gandhi, and the PMML is now seeking their restoration, believing these documents hold critical insight into Indian history.
Why Return the Letters Now?
In September 2024, Rizwan Kadri, a member of the PMML Society, wrote to Sonia Gandhi requesting the return of the letters, which include significant correspondences between Nehru and influential figures like Lady Mountbatten, Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant, and Jayaprakash Narayan.
However, as no response was received, Kadri turned to Rahul Gandhi, urging him to intervene. The question now is why these letters, which were withheld for years, are so important to the nation’s historical legacy.
What’s So Special About These Letters?
The letters in question are not ordinary documents but significant pieces of India’s past. They include important relations between Nehru and prominent personalities like Lady Mountbatten, the wife of the last British Viceroy, and other political figures of the time.
These letters are believed to offer key insights into Nehru's political strategies and personal views, providing a deeper understanding of India's journey toward independence and its post-independence politics. The PMML claims these materials are important for research and scholarly study.
Why Did Sonia Gandhi Take the Documents?
The letters were removed in 2008 at the request of Sonia Gandhi when she was the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) chairperson. The reasons for the withdrawal remain unclear, sparking curiosity and rumour about what might be contained within them.
BJP MP Sambit Patra expressed conspiracy on social media, asking, “What did Nehru write to Lady Mountbatten that needed to be hidden?” There is growing public interest in these letters, especially about any content that may have been believed offensive or sensitive at the time.
Rahul Gandhi’s Role in Restoring History
The PMML Society is now turning to Rahul Gandhi, urging him to help restore these important documents to the public. These letters, they argue, are an essential part of the nation’s heritage and should be available for future generations to learn from.
Kadri wishes that with Rahul Gandhi's help, the letters can be returned, allowing historians and scholars to gain a clearer picture of India's past.
