A BJP-supported Sikh group organized a protest outside Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s residence in Delhi, expressing strong disapproval of his recent statements made during a visit to the United States. The protesters clashed with police, attempting to break through barricades on Janpath road. Gandhi, who is currently on a four-day trip to the US, made comments about religious freedom in India during a speech to Indian Americans in Herndon, Virginia.
Controversial Remarks and BJP’s Response
During his speech, Rahul Gandhi highlighted concerns about religious freedoms in India, stating, “The fight is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban or kada in India, or whether he will be able to go to a gurdwara.” This remark drew sharp criticism from the BJP, who accused Gandhi of creating a “dangerous narrative” by discussing sensitive issues abroad. The BJP-backed Sikh group protested against Gandhi’s remarks, carrying placards with slogans such as “Why does Rahul Gandhi defame Sikhs after going abroad? Shame on you.”
Calls for Apology and Criticisms
The protesting group, which also planned a march to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s residence, demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi. They argued that Sikhs are more secure under the current BJP government than they were during Congress rule. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri labeled Gandhi’s comments as “sinister,” suggesting they were intended to spread harmful narratives. He also pointed out that the Sikh community has historically felt insecure during periods when Gandhi’s family was in power, referencing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Gandhi’s Broader Critique of BJP and RSS
In his US address, Gandhi criticized the BJP and its affiliates, including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He claimed that the fear of Modi and the BJP had dissipated after recent election results. Gandhi accused the RSS of promoting a narrow and outdated vision of India, contrasting it with the Congress party’s commitment to diversity and liberal values. He also criticized the RSS for influencing India’s educational institutions and limiting women’s roles.
International Criticism and Previous Remarks
Gandhi’s comments abroad are not unprecedented. Last year, during a visit to the UK, he compared the RSS to the Muslim Brotherhood, accusing it of using democratic processes to undermine democracy. His statements have consistently aimed at highlighting what he views as threats to India’s democratic and secular fabric. As the controversy continues, the debate over Gandhi’s comments and their impact on domestic and international perceptions of India remains a hot topic.
