Putting the pieces together of the Sandeshkhali scandal: the CBI is after suspended TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh
In the midst of West Bengal’s multi-crore ration distribution scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has stepped up its search for Shahjahan Sheikh, the leader of the suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC). The agency has brought serious charges against Sheikh, his brother, and five associates, which is a major move that will have more legal effects on the controversial figure.
The charges are conspiracy and trying to kill someone.
The CBI’s first charge sheet, which was presented to the Basirhat special court on Monday, makes a huge number of accusations against the person being charged. At the heart of the charges are the serious crimes of criminal plot under Section 120-B and attempted murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Along with these serious charges, there are also charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, and many other things that make a bleak picture of what happened on January 5th in Sandeshkhali, an island in the river that is about 80 kilometers from Kolkata.
The Sandeshkhali Incident: A Fight That Got Physical
The charges are related to a terrifying event where an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team along with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) got into a dangerous fight with a large group of people thought to be around 1,000 strong. The ED agents went to Sandeshkhali with two goals: to search Sheikh’s home in connection with the ration distribution scam and to arrest him because of alleged ties to Jyoti Priya Mallick, the former state food minister who is still being investigated in the same case.
But they ran into strong opposition when they tried to carry out their task. An angry crowd is said to have attacked the police, which led the CBI to start a full investigation into what happened.
The Accused: A Group of Suspected Partners
Not only does the charge sheet name Shahjahan Sheikh and his brother Alomgir, but it also names Jiauddin Mollah, Mafujar Mollah, and Didarbaksh Mollah as people who were involved with them. This group of people is accused of planning and carrying out the violent attack, which has caught the attention of the whole country and made people worry about the rule of law in the area.
