Red Fort Metro Blast Kills 10, Injures 20; Delhi, Mumbai on High Alert as UAPA Invoked in Terror Probe
An explosion of high intensity was experienced in a slow moving car at traffic signal in the vicinity of the Red Fort metro station on Monday (November 10) evening. Twenty people were also wounded in the blast which gutted a number of vehicles.
New Delhi (India) November 11: There was a massive explosion in a Hyundai i20, stationed at Gate No. 1 of Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station, at around 6:50 pm on Monday when the slow-moving vehicle had to stop for a red light. Ten people were killed in the explosion and many others were critically wounded, rushed to hospitals. The anti-terror law, UAPA, has been invoked in the FIR by probing agencies who suspected it to be a premeditated terror strike. Key cities, such as Delhi and Mumbai, as well as some states are on high alert.
Probe Uncovers Terror Links
After the Red Fort blast, security agencies have been hot on the trail of several in terrorist module and it has managed to picked up leads with only one drawback that the doctor who blasted himself off in Metro parking lot yesterday remains untraced.
The doctor was under surveillance since posters in support of JeM terror outfit had appeared in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, a few days ago. The raids followed the seizure of large hoards of cash, ammonium nitrate and assault rifles in Faridabad, near Delhi, a day earlier.
Capital Under Restrictions
The railway board had put all 19 zones and 70 divisions on high alert, a senior Indian Railways official said. In a move to intensify security, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has also increased vigil at railway stations of Chakradharpur Railway Division such as Tatanagar, Chakradharpur, Rourkela and Jharsuguda.
The RPF, at stations and parking spaces, are carrying out extensive searches for two-wheelers and four-wheelers that seem suspicious to them. Dog squads have also been employed for further surveillance. Corners are manned by RPF staff — both in plainclothes and uniformed with arms, while luggage of the passengers has a screening here too.
Red Fort Metro Restrictions
The Red Fort Metro Station has been closed for commuters a day after an explosion in the area claimed at least nine lives and restrictions have also been imposed on traffic movement, officials said on Tuesday.
The Delhi Traffic police issued an advisory that there are restrictions and diversion of traffic both on carriageways and service roads -- Netaji Subhash Marg from Chatta Rail Cut to Subhash Marg Cut.
The traffic police asked the local people to avoid these routes during 6 AM onwards till a further order and take alternative roads for their convenience.
Nation on High Alert
The national capital has been put on high alert with heightened vigil kept at the airport, railway stations and bus terminals.
Arrest of suspected terrorists in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana over the intervening days across elaborate counter-terror operations point to a bigger network. After the Red Fort blast, police are looking into possible connections of the blast with previous terror modules that were detected.
