Olympian Says Wrestlers Will Appeal Court Verdict, 'We Have Not Given Up.'

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has said she and the other women wrestlers will appeal the acquittal of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh in the sexual harassment case. Calling the verdict heartbreaking, Vinesh said their fight for justice is far from over.

The statement came shortly after a court acquitted Brij Bhushan Singh and former WFI secretary Vinod Tomar in the case filed by six women wrestlers.

Vinesh Phogat says the fight will continue

In response to the court's decision, Vinesh said the wrestlers were disappointed at the time but also determined to fight on.

She said the athletes had shown great courage by protesting and demanding that an FIR be registered against Brij Bhushan. Many women were under pressure and intimidation in the case. Vinesh said the wrestlers have instructed their lawyers to appeal against the verdict as soon as possible.

"We have not given up hope, and the wrestlers will continue their fight," she said.

Background of the Case

The case dates back to Jan 2023 when the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi witnessed some top Indian wrestlers protesting.

The wrestlers accused Brij Bhushan Singh of sexually harassing women athletes for years and also demanded his arrest and removal from the Wrestling Federation of India.

The protest attracted national attention and led to the registration of a police case. After a two-year legal process, the court acquitted Brij Bhushan Singh and Vinod Tomar.

Brij Bhushan calls Verdict a 'Moment of Happiness'

After the verdict was delivered, Brij Bhushan Singh welcomed the court's decision and termed it as a “moment of happiness.”

He said he had maintained his innocence from the beginning and had said if even one accusation against him was proved, he would accept the strictest punishment. After the acquittal, he said that the court’s decision confirmed his position.

What is next?

The wrestlers have said they will appeal the acquittal in higher courts.Their legal team will launch a fight soon so the case can run its course through the courts.

The outcome of the appeal will determine the next stage in one of India’s most high-profile sports-related legal cases.

Though the court has acquitted Brij Bhushan Singh and Vinod Tomar, the matter is not over. The women wrestlers will continue their legal fight in court through appeals, Vinesh Phogat’s statement states.

The whole case, which began with nationwide protests in 2023, still plays an important role in Indian wrestling, and the final legal decision now looks more likely to be decided in a higher court.

Indian Athletes Op Up on Injury, Self-Doubt and the Fight That Led to a Historic Medal

Tejaswin Shankar has revealed the emotional story of getting a bronze medal in the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The 27-year-old said in a statement he was nearly quitting the competition after he suffered a knee injury and wondered if all that hard work had gone for nothing.

Despite this setback, Tejaswin fought back and became the first Indian athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon, so making history for Indian athletics.

The knee injury almost ended his campaign.

Tejaswin’s Commonwealth Games journey almost came to an end before it even began.

He injured his knee during the warm-up for the men's high jump. The official event list even marked him as DNS (Did Not Start) after he initially withdrew from the competition.

He returned to try it later but was unable to continue after failing his first jump. That was the end of his chances in the decathlon.

"I Gave Up for a While," Says Tejaswin

After the Games, Tejaswin posted an emotional message on social media.

And he said a few days after the injury he lost confidence and started to question everything.

"I gave up for a while. I questioned everything. I wondered if all the preparation had been for nothing."

He had the toughest time of his sporting career, physically, emotionally.

Support helped him make a comeback.

Tejaswin said Dr. Wayne Lombard and the strength and conditioning team helped him recover in time for the decathlon.

He was emotionally broken but he was not going to quit.

He said he gradually gained confidence with treatment sessions, every event and each lap which he had to keep moving forward.

Historic Bronze for India

Tejaswin’s determination paid off.

He had a good Day 1 performance, especially in his favourite high jump event and that put him to second place.

He stayed in medal contention until the final day and finally won the bronze medal, becoming the first Indian ever to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon.

The accomplishment is one of the biggest points in Indian athletics.

A Medal That He Gave to Everyone Who Supported Him.

Looking back, Tejaswin said he could not have achieved this success alone.

He thanked his coaches, medical team, teammates, family, friends, sponsors and fans for standing by him when he found it difficult to believe in himself.

They, he said, gave him the strength to fight on.

A Lesson Beyond Winning

Tejaswin thinks that experience taught him that success in sports is not so much talent as strength.

And sometimes the greatest victory is not to give up, he said.

He had dreamed of winning a different colour medal, he believes the bronze medal taught him lessons that an easy victory never did.

Tejaswin Shankar’s bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 is much more than a sporting achievement. It is a story of courage, resilience and determination.

He had to overcome injury and self-doubt and made history as India’s first Commonwealth Games decathlon medallist. His journey underlined to me that even when everything seems lost, believing in yourself and never giving up can lead to lasting success in life.

India’s First-Ever Commonwealth Games Judo Gold Dedicated to Her Late Father

India created history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Asmita Dey won the first-ever gold medal in judo. But for the 27-year-old judoka, the victory was much more than the podium.

After winning the historic gold, Asmita emotionally dedicated the medal to her late father, saying, “This medal is as much my father's as it is mine.” Her touching words have won hearts across the country.

A Historic Gold for India

Asmita Dey became the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, ending a 36-year wait for the country in the sport.

She defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach in a nail-biter of a final with great determination and confidence to win the biggest victory of her career.

Her gold medal is a historic moment for Indian judo and another proud chapter in India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

A Father's Dream Came True

Asmita was born in Belonia, Tripura, into a poor family. Her father ran a small bicycle repair shop but he always encouraged her to pursue her dreams even in her dire financial circumstances.

She said her father made many sacrifices to support her career. When she suffered a serious knee injury, he sold what little he had and personally took her to Delhi for treatment.

Sadly, her father died in December 2025, seven months before the Commonwealth Games.

Remembering him after her victory, Asmita said she wished he had been there to see her win the gold medal.

From Athletics to Judo

Asmita did not start her sporting journey in judo.

She loved sports as a child as well: running and shot put. Later, a school coach saw her talent and encouraged her to try judo.

It was that decision that changed her life and she eventually became one of India’s top judokas.

She is also a Sub-Inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police, which is an asset to her sporting career and for her family.

The Winning Moment

The gold medal match against Heidi Quach went into the Golden Score period.

Instead of waiting for her opponent to make a mistake, Asmita decided to attack.

She would later say that she had told herself to stay positive and take control of the match. Her brave approach made her win India’s first Commonwealth Games judo gold.

A Special Celebration on the Podium

After receiving her medal, Asmita held it close to her chest and made a heart shape with her hands.

She said that the gesture was not planned. It was her way of thanking her coach Yashpal Solanki, her late father and every Indian who supported her journey.

She wanted every person back home to feel that the gold medal belonged to them as well.

Asmita Dey's historic gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 is a story of courage, sacrifice and determination. From growing up in a small town in Tripura to becoming India's first-ever Commonwealth Games judo champion, her journey is truly inspiring.

Her emotional tribute to her late father has made the victory even more special, reminding everyone that behind every champion is a story of hard work, love and sacrifice. Asmita’s achievement will inspire young athletes across India to dream big and never give up.
