Shreyas Iyer in the headline again

India’s star batter, Shreyas Iyer, had been among the headlines for reasons both on and off the field over the past month. Without giving a reason, Iyer was removed from the Indian squad after the second Test match against England in February in Visakhapatnam. After the second Test, Iyer complained of back problems, but the NCA found him fit, therefore he was removed off BCCI central contracts.

Removed from BCCI's Annual Contract List

After being left off of the annual contracts list, Iyer agreed with the BCCI’s instructions about players’ involvement in the Ranji Trophy and became a member of Mumbai’s team for the domestic first-class competition. He maintained its position in the starting lineup for Mumbai’s match against Vidarbha this week.

All set to miss some matches for KKR

But according to reports, Iyer is reportedly experiencing back pain once more and may miss the Kolkata Knight Riders’ season opener. If verified, this raises a significant query: was the Indian batter forced to compete again in the Ranji Trophy? Iyer’s back problem returned during his blistering 95-run innings in the second Ranji Trophy final at Wankhede Stadium. Iyer had to stop twice during his 111-ball knock on Tuesday to receive back spasm treatment from the Mumbai physiotherapist.

Missed the field on Day 4 and Day 5

On the other hand, the 29-year-old was unable to play on Day Four of the Ranji Trophy final. As per reports, Iyer had a back scan at a hospital, which revealed the extent of his injuries and raised concerns about whether he will play in the competition going forward. “It does not appear good. The back injury is still the same, but it has become worse. He may miss the Indian Premier League’s opening games”

Iyer’s back pain problems

A back injury kept Shreyas Iyer out of the Indian Premier League for the whole previous season. Following back surgery in April, he was also ruled out of India’s World Test Championship final match against Australia. Following several months out for recovery and rest, the 29-year-old re-joined the national squad for the Asia Cup and went on to play in the 2023 World Cup. With 530 runs scored in 11 games, Iyer was India’s third-highest run scorer in the competition.
