Indian-origin politician Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Karen Bass to become the next mayor of Los Angeles.

Raman is set to become Los Angeles' first South Asian and Asian American mayor. She previously served as a City Council member.

Raman secured 52.1% of the votes, defeating Bass, who received 47.9%.

Raman campaigned on affordable housing, better public transport and improved city services.
