Raising Awareness on World No Tobacco Day
May 31st is World No Tobacco Day, a global event led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about the dangers of the use of tobacco. This year’s theme is "Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference," highlighting the need to protect young people from the tobacco industry's manipulative and harmful tactics.
Focus on Youth Protection
The WHO has laid stress on the vulnerability of today’s generation to tobacco. When kids are exposed to tobacco usage by elder family members at home or in their community, they are more likely to start smoking themselves. World No Tobacco Day 2024 has strong policies and aims to protect children from these influences, helping them to prevent any kind of harmful addiction and protect their health for a better future.
Smoking's Devastating Impact
This year's theme focuses on protecting the youth and it is important to remember how harmful smoking is to everyone. Smoking is the leading cause of death across the world which can be prevented but the youth successfully gets trapped by tobacco, resulting in killing millions of people each year.
Tobacco affects almost every part of the body. Let us take a look at the harmful effects of tobacco:
- Cardiovascular System
Heart and Blood Vessels: Smoking increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
- Digestive System
Stomach and Pancreas: There is a higher risk of stomach and pancreatic cancers, ulcers, and acid reflux.
- Skin Health
Ageing and Skin Cancer: Smoking causes wrinkles, dryness, and sagging skin, and increases the risk of skin cancer.
- Reproductive System
Fertility and Pregnancy: It reduces fertility, causes erectile dysfunction, and leads to complications in pregnancy.

Taking Action for a Healthier Future
World No Tobacco Day aims to raise awareness of the serious impact smoking has on our health and society. It is important to understand the risks and support the strong policies of WHO to protect children and reduce tobacco use, so we can work towards a healthier future for everyone.
