Dr Jeremy London shared some things you can do to take care of your heart on Instagram. He said there are five things you can do to protect your heart and stay healthy. The good thing is you can start doing these things today.
1. Stop smoking
Smoking is very bad for your heart. It does not matter if you smoke cigarettes, vape or weed. Smoking hurts your blood vessels reduces oxygen in your body and increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Dr Jeremy London says you should not smoke all. Some people think vaping or smoking sometimes is okay. It can really hurt your heart and lungs over time. If you stop smoking after you're 30 it can really help your blood circulation and make you healthier in the future.
2. Eat smart and cut out processed foods
The food you eat is what your body becomes. When you are over 30 your body does not burn food fast and eating unhealthy food can cause problems.
Foods that are processed sugary drinks, junk food and foods that are high in bad fats can make you obese give you high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. Instead you should eat a diet with a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, nuts and lean proteins.
Just changing a things about what you eat can make a big difference. Drinking water eating less sugar and eating meals you make at home can help your heart stay healthy for a long time.
3. Check your blood pressure all the time
High blood pressure is called the killer because a lot of people do not even know they have it. Experts say that if you do not control your blood pressure it can quietly hurt your heart, kidneys and brain over time.
Checking your blood pressure after you are 30 is one of the ways to prevent serious heart problems. If you find out you have blood pressure early you can make changes to your lifestyle before it becomes a big problem.
Even if you feel healthy you should still go to the doctor regularly to make sure you stay healthy.
4. Move your body every day
Exercise is one of the things you can do for your heart. You do not have to exercise a lot every day. You should move your body regularly.
Dr Jeremy London says you should do exercises like walking, jogging, cycling or swimming and you should also do exercises to make your muscles stronger.
Just moving your body for 30 minutes every day can make your heart healthier help you stay at a weight reduce stress and give you more energy. Small things like taking the stairs walking after meals or stretching regularly can also help.
5. Prioritize sleep
Sleep is when your body fixes itself. If you do not sleep well it can increase hormones, blood pressure and the risk of heart disease.
A lot of people do not sleep enough because of work, social media or being busy. Experts say sleep is just as important as eating well and exercising.
You should try to sleep for 7 or 8 hours every night without any interruptions. If you have a sleep routine it can improve your mental health make your immune system stronger and protect your heart.
The choices you make today will decide how healthy you will be in the future. If you start some habits after you are 30 you can live a stronger, happier and healthier life when you are, in your 80s.
