New Delhi [India], August 12: There is a question most expecting mothers never think to ask. They scrutinise every vitamin, read every ingredient label, research every hospital. They track their diet, avoid certain foods, and do almost everything right.
And then they pour a glass of water from the filter on the kitchen counter — without a second thought.
SOMAWA, India’s only water ionizer brand institutionally backed by the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), an enterprise of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, has published a guide that tries to answer the question most pregnancy resources have never thought to raise. Not whether you should drink water. But what is actually inside the water you are drinking — and whether it is doing enough.
During pregnancy, the body is running two lives simultaneously. That extraordinary workload generates something scientists call oxidative stress — more internal wear than the body can comfortably clear on its own. When it accumulates too fast, complications can follow. The most studied of these is preeclampsia, a condition marked by elevated blood pressure that affects five to eight in every hundred pregnancies worldwide.
A 2007 paper in Nature Medicine, cited over 2,500 times since, identified that molecular hydrogen — the smallest molecule in existence, roughly 88 times smaller than Vitamin C — behaves unlike any known antioxidant. Rather than clearing everything indiscriminately, it targets only the most harmful particles while leaving the ones the body needs intact. Two independent research teams then applied this finding to preeclampsia and both found the same result: mothers given hydrogen-rich water showed lower blood pressure, healthier placentas, and babies that weighed more at birth.
The finding that surprised researchers most came from a 2018 study in Scientific Reports, a Nature journal. The molecule did not stay in the mother. It crossed the maternal-fetal interface and reached the developing brain — where it produced measurable neuroprotective effects in offspring. A Cochrane review of four clinical trials involving 122 women confirmed separately that maternal hydration directly increases amniotic fluid volume — the fluid that cushions, nourishes, and protects the baby throughout gestation.
The SOMAWA guide publishes every study, every journal, every DOI. And then does something most wellness brands quietly avoid — it tells readers that most of this research was conducted in animal models and that a large-scale human clinical trial does not yet exist. That transparency is deliberate.
Speaking about the guide, Gitanshu Mittal, Founder of SOMAWA said: “The science around molecular hydrogen is one of the most exciting areas in wellness research right now — and one of the least known. We wanted to give expecting mothers access to it in language that res
pects their intelligence. No overclaiming. No pressure. Just information they deserve to have.”
Most Indian families drink RO water. It is clean — but a reverse-osmosis membrane cannot distinguish calcium from lead. It removes both. During pregnancy, calcium is building the baby’s skeleton and magnesium is keeping the mother’s blood pressure steady. SOMAWA water ionizers work differently: they pass electric current through the source water, supercharging the calcium and magnesium already present in it, while raising pH naturally. The result is water that is clean, mineral-rich, and delivers dissolved molecular hydrogen up to 2,000 ppb with an ORP as low as −1,000 mV. Every number verifiable on a calibrated meter in any kitchen before a purchase is made.
