Two suspects of the Rashid Cablewala gang were arrested and taken into custody in the intense firing between Delhi Police and other persons in the Usmanpur area today after a gang clash. According to police, 28 rounds were fired. The two men fired 12 rounds at the police and 16 rounds at the police officers. One was shot in the leg and the other in the chest and they were taken to a hospital for treatment, they said.
Police Officers' Bulletproof Jackets Hit.
The gunfight became more dangerous when two police officers came under direct fire, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Rahul Alwal. A sub-inspector and head constable were both hit with one bullet each, he said. The two suspects were also injured when police returned fire, the report said. They suffered bullet injuries to their left legs and were admitted to a nearby hospital.
How Police tracked the Suspects.
The case started after unidentified attackers allegedly opened fire in the businessman’s house in Bhajanpura on 2 October. Police said at least five bullets were fired at the house. The incident was linked to extortion demands. During the investigation police discovered that the businessman had received extortion calls but didn’t tell the police about them at first. Investigators then used technical surveillance and field intelligence to find the suspected attackers. The Special Staff team followed up with the suspects and kept track of their activities.
Trap Laid in Usmanpur.
The police received information on Sunday night that the two suspects were in Usmanpur. Based on that information, the Special Staff team arrived at the location and set up a trap. The suspects had been identified and asked to surrender, police said. But instead of surrendering, the two allegedly pulled out firearms and opened fire on the police team. They fired 12 rounds, said the police. Bullets struck the bulletproof jackets of the sub-inspector and head constable. The officers were not injured. But the police team returned fire and fired 16 rounds at them. Both suspects were struck in their legs and taken into custody.
Investigation Into Bhajanpura Firing.
The men are said to have been involved in firing on the businessman’s home following an extortion demand, the police said. Police are now looking into the role of the two arrested men in the Bhajanpura firing case. The police will also probe whether they are connected to the Rashid Cablewala gang and the source of the firearms used in the shooting incident. The arrests come as police are investigating extortion-related firing incidents in Delhi.
