Sonam Wangchuk Wants Political System Reformed

As a scientist and activist Sonam Wangchuk calls on the public to push for peaceful political reform of democracy ahead of 2047.

Sonam Wangchuk has called for the "second independence movement" that he describes as India’s second Independence movement and believes the country needs major changes in the way political leaders are selected.In a post on X, Wangchuk said India needs a peaceful revolution to reform its political system and ensure that the country remains a “respectable nation” by 2047.

He said citizens should think about who should lead the country and people should recommend individuals who are selfless, fearless and have strong character.

Wangchuk Raises Concern Over Criminal Cases

Wangchuk also raised issues of criminal cases involving elected representatives.He added that nearly half of India’s MPs have criminal cases against them, while about one-third are at very serious risk of being convicted of murder, rape and kidnapping.

According to Wangchuk, these cases are contributing to a growing trust deficit between citizens and the political system.His remarks have come at a time of political accountability, leadership quality and reforms in India’s democratic system.

‘Peaceful Revolution’ Needed, Says Wangchuk

Wangchuk said the changes he is calling for should happen through a peaceful movement.He argued that India needs to rethink how it chooses its political leaders if it wants to build a stronger future by 2047, the year of 100 years of India’s Independence.

And not only with existing political structures, Wangchuk called on citizens to identify people who could contribute to the country’s future through leadership based on character, courage and public service.

Wangchuk said he plans to consult some of the “best minds” across India to discuss what needs to change and how those changes could be achieved.But even so, he told us that the conversation should not just be about academics and experts or intellectuals.

He stressed that the government needs to include ordinary citizens in the political discussion regarding India’s future.
