CJP Plans Mass Hunger Strike As Wangchuk's Health Deteriorates

Wangchuk shared a video from the protest site on his social media and wrote, “I’m Not in good shape but not so bad either. Rather than asking me to break my fast please join me on 20th July. Peaceful March to the Parliament.”

Wangchuk Remains Weak, Under Constant Monitoring

A medical bulletin issued by the CJP stated that Wangchuk continues to be “very weak” and is on 24-hour medical surveillance, although doctors said he is conscious and mentally alert. He needed monitoring. 

CJP Founder Abhijit Dipke said, "Day 18 of Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike. The man who chose to put his own life on the line to seek justice for students who died by suicide has received nothing but silence from the government. The government is not just unaccountable; it is also cruel."

"Instead of asking why opposition leaders haven't supported CJP, or why every CJP team member isn't on a hunger strike alongside Sonam sir, ask the questions that actually matter. Why is the Prime Minister refusing to engage in a dialogue? Why is the Education Minister still not being held accountable?" he added.

Atul Kulkarni Observes Fast in Solidarity

Actor Atul Kulkarni is also observing one day fast to support climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. The actor has joined Wangchuk, whose health is a major cause for concern. Kulkarni became the latest Bollywood personality to endorse Wangchuk and his activism.

Kulkarni said he will observe one day fast at his home on Thursday as a tribute to the veteran climate activist. Kulkarni urged the public to also participate and support the message of the Wangchuk.

Atul Kulkarni said, “Tomorrow, on July 16, I will be observing a one-day hunger strike from my own home. There are two reasons behind this fast. Firstly, I want to connect with the pain that Sonam ji and his associates are going through. Secondly, I want to request our government to show its sensitivity towards the matter.”

“I am not ready to believe that our government is insensitive, because many times we have seen our government express emotions and connect with the pain of the people. Perhaps, in this case, there are some misunderstandings due to which this sensitivity is not being expressed and a dialogue is not taking place," he added.

Plea in Delhi HC Seeks Medical Intervention

A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court urging the authorities to force-feed the activist Sonam Wangchuk and shift him to the government hospital in view of his deteriorated health. In the petition, it is said that the activist's health condition is quite serious and that he can succumb within two days of hunger strike if continued. The petition asked the court to immediately take notice, as it is of great importance that Wangchuk's life is saved.

The plea requested the court to ask government authorities to get Wangchuk transferred to a government hospital and also administered a medically monitored liquid diet if necessary, which is to be composed of adequate nutrients, vitamins and minerals so that the activist's health condition could be preserved and his life could be saved.
