Economist, social activist and development economist Jean Drèze on Saturday criticised the massive security deployment in Delhi ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar. He alleged that the restrictions were disproportional and that the government feared that people would become aware of alleged threats to their voting rights.

Speaking to demonstrators, Drèze questioned the scale of the security arrangements and their impact on public participation. Speaking on behalf of those that could not reach the protest site, he referred to the "incredible show of force" as being "completely out of proportion."

Drèze also alleged that the deployment of the security forces was not necessarily because of concerns about violence or public safety but that the government feared that the people of this country would become aware of their right to vote being taken away.

The reason why the government is so afraid is not that there is any risk of violence or any security risk, it is that the government is afraid that the people of this country will understand that their right to vote is being taken away" he said.

His remarks came as CJP supporters gathered to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

‘Where Have You Come From?’ Reporter’s Questions Draw Attention

Besides his criticism of the security measures, an exchange between Drèze and a television reporter became a talking point on social media.

During the interaction at Jantar Mantar, the reporter was heard asking Drèze, "Who are you?" and “Bhaisahab, aap ho kahan se?” The questions prompted online discussion, with the interaction drawing attention alongside the wider developments regarding the CJP demonstration.

The exchange added another layer to the coverage of the protest, which had attracted attention over the security deployment and the party's demands pertaining to electoral transparency.
