New Delhi (India) March 22:Robert S. Mueller III, the former FBI director renowned for his leadership of the investigation into suspected Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election , has passed away at the age of 81.
Family Announces His Death
His family shared the sad news following his death on the previous day. In their announcement, they requested privacy during this challenging time.
While details surrounding his passing remain private, it was revealed in August 2022 that Mueller had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years earlier, which had led to difficulties with speaking and movement.
Trump's Harsh Truth Social Post
In reaction to Mueller's death, former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social and wrote, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”
He expressed his thoughts in a statement that stirred renewed discussions about their fraught history.
Early Days as a Prosecutor
Throughout his career, Mueller was known for his integrity and tenacity. As a young prosecutor in San Francisco and Boston, he tackled tough cases involving brutal murders, organized crime, financial fraud, and terrorism, earning respect for his balanced approach—winning some cases while losing others, yet never facing serious criticism for his work.
Respected FBI Leader Across Parties
During his tenure at the FBI, Mueller developed a reputation as a diligent and exacting leader, garnering respect from politicians across party lines despite his Republican roots. After stepping down from the FBI, he was appointed as special counsel to investigate whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to influence the election.
Controversial Trump-Russia Probe
Mueller's investigation, which began in 2017, became a significant and often contentious aspect of Trump's presidency. The former president frequently denounced the inquiry as a “witch hunt,” labeling it a politically motivated attempt to undermine his administration. He also expressed suspicions about Mueller's impartiality, citing their prior connections to former FBI Director James Comey.
The Mueller Report, released in a redacted form in April 2019, detailed numerous instances where Trump attempted to interfere with the investigation.
