A disturbing episode in Uttam Nagar, West Delhi , erupted after a Holi celebration was hijacked into a battle between rival families, two neighbours who are said to have been at war for decades.
The two families - separate but adjacent communities - have lived side by side in the JJ Colony area for nearly 50 years, after recurring quarrels over parking and garbage disposal. The festering tension spilled over on 4th March during Holi festivities.
How the Holi Dispute Escalated
The dispute reportedly started when a water balloon thrown by a girl in a Hindu family inadvertently splashed coloured water on a Muslim woman. What began as a minor disagreement grew over time, with both families camping out over the street in a physical altercation.
In this conflict, 8 people suffered injuries including serious injuries: Tarun Kumar (26). Although most were discharged later, Tarun was admitted to hospital in critical condition.
The police declared an FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita under the charge of attempting to commit culpable homicide and common intention.
Death Turns Case Into Murder Investigation
Tragically, Tarun Kumar died on March 5 of injuries, and the authorities added murder charges to the case.
Seven people, including six adults and one minor, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Communal Tensions Rise in the Area
Following this death, community tensions got worse. Over the next couple of days, several vehicles were vandalised and set on fire, and authorities brought over huge police and paramilitary forces to keep the peace.
News was circulated and residents were urged not to believe rumours, police officials said, cautioning against efforts to communalise the crime.
Protests by Right-Wing Groups
Demonstrations organised by organisations such as Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad were held near the Uttam Nagar East Metro Station, where they put up roadblocks and demanded stringent measures against the accused.
After several calls for help led to repeated requests for it, the police eventually resorted to mild force to disperse the protesters.
Situation Under Control
Authorities maintained that extra police and paramilitary help remain on-site as a precautionary measure to prevent an increase in tensions and a potential escalation.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
