New Delhi (India) March 25:Iran claimed that it targeted a cruise missile at the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, according to Iran's state TV. There is not a comment or confirmation from the US side yet. Iranian Army public relations announced coastal cruise missile firing was aimed at the US aircraft carrier.
"The Iranian Navy's Qader cruise missiles (shore-based anti-ship missile) targeted the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier belonging to the US and forced it to change its position," said the Iran military .
Iran Claims Carrier Forced to Retreat
Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said that the aircraft carrier entering the range of Iran's missile systems would be hit by the Army Navy. The ship is under constant surveillance, he added. The attack involved Qader anti-ship missiles, which are intended to strike large naval units from coastlines.
Officials in Iran alleged that the strike caused the carrier to alter its sea position, showing that the strike had a tactical effect. Iranian media shared a video showing missiles being fired into the air with explosions, but it is not possible to independently verify the video.
Strike Hits During Ceasefire Talks
The attack was reported to have been carried out at a time when the United States was trying to negotiate a ceasefire with Iran. The US is said to have offered a 15-point peace plan that includes a stop in fighting and talks on Iran's nuclear program and other major issues.
Unfortunately, this escalation may complicate those plans because military action during sensitive diplomatic talks usually is an issue of trust and can result in both sides having a hard time coming to terms. Besides that, it may also push back a ceasefire in the short-term. In the next few days, we will know if the situation is moving toward peace or to more conflict.
War Risks Oil Prices and Global Economy
The war, starting on February 28by a US-Israeli bombing campaign on Iran , has in a short period of time involved the whole region, raising oil prices and causing a threat to the global economy.
Diplomats and Mediators said that they were carrying out their work in a secret way to relay messages to the opposing sides, despite official contradictory sentences about whether the talks are actually going on. However, the war/military operations went on - the targets that are located in Iran, Israel Lebanon and Saudi Arabia and all were exposed to fire.
