Dowry Dispute at Wedding Ends in Tragedy Father Dead.
Originally anticipated to be a joyful wedding celebration, a wrenching tragedy unfolded in Uttarakhand's Khatima town when the bride’s father allegedly died — having had a fatal heart attack after a heated argument over dowry requests and the “mehr” amount during the marriage ceremony. The shocking incident happened in the Islamnagar area of Khatima and shocked those caught up in the marriage. It was followed by sudden tensions that escalated, violence, unrest and police presence at the wedding venue.

The ceremony went well at first but trouble started during the nikah process. The bride's relatives claimed that after the institution of the marriage was secured, the groom's side kept requesting more dowry. They alleged that the requirements originated with a scooter, then transformed into motorcycle and lastly, in cash amounting to ₹1 lakh.
The 'mehr' amount, which is a gift the groom gives to his bride from Islamic law as a gift, created a confrontation over further misunderstanding. The bride's family was apparently determined to be given ₹5 lakh, but the groom's family was willing to offer only ₹21,000, and there was no agreement to divide and conquer. After a series of efforts by family members and community men to settle the matter, it could not come to an agreement. Bride’s Father Suffers Heart Attack. The bride's father, Sadiq, has apparently since become ill as tensions continue to deteriorate between them during the discussions.
Family members rushed him instantly to a hospital near him for treatment. But when doctors arrived, he was declared dead. Relatives said the intense emotional pressure brought on by the continuing dispute led to a fatal heart attack. But the news hit home, reverberating around the wedding space and breaking apart the joy of family members who had been celebrating the event. Anger Turns Into Violence. Shortly after word of the death of Sadiq, the bride’s family and local people seethed with anger.
Mohammad Arif, the groom, was reportedly seized from inside the marriage hall by a mass of people and also a group of wedding partygoers. Several guests were allegedly assaulted in a fit of emotion. Witnesses said members of the groom's side tried to try and escape through the roof of a neighboring building. In the height of the panic, parts of the roof collapsed, injuring some people, the neighbors reported. The police manage situation.
Police teams from Khatima Kotwali reacted quickly to the disturbances and were able to keep order. Many more security agents were sent in to check any more crime and keep order. Authorities say statements from both families have been recorded and that an investigation is ongoing. This tragedy has again given insight into domestic issues around dowry — conflicts over dowry — and family conflicts as they relate to marriages.
