New Delhi (India) October 13: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Tuesday directed the petitioners in matters related to protests against special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to get the lapses rectified in their pleas.
Supreme Court Registry Lists 14 Defects
The order was issued a day after the Supreme Court registry pointed out 14 errors in the petition filed by the INDIA bloc against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing massive voter deletions and irregularities in the SIR exercise.
As per the Supreme Court website, the registry identified deficiencies in the petition, including the lack of a clear copy of the identity card of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The registry also brought to notice the missing pages of the materials submitted.
Raut Says Errors Will Be Fixed
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, after the Supreme Court registry flagged the flaws in the opposition bloc's petition, said the INDIA bloc is determined. He claimed that the opposition demanded the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and wanted the names taken off the list of voters to be restored.
Raut said, "The petition that has been filed mentions that the fee is short by Rs 220, there are several errors, and there are facts about 14 documents mentioned in it. Well, it is possible. We have individual petitions in the names of Rahul Ji, Mallikarjun Kharge Ji, and all other India Bloc leaders. There might be some errors in it, which we will now rectify and repair," to ANI.
Opposition Seeks Investigation
On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, along with other opposition leaders, assembled at the Court to submit the plea. The INDIA bloc demanded an investigation into the Election Commission's functioning and actions to ensure that CEC Gyanesh Kumar does not take decisions without consulting the commission.
The petition also flagged issues regarding purported arbitrary deletions of voters and the systems for the utilization and deployment of EVMs. They also demanded that voters eligible for voting should be included in the electoral rolls.
Those who have filed the petition are Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, TMC leader and MP Saugata Roy, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav of RJD, Supriya Sule of NCP, Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena-UBT, D Raja of Congress Party of India (CPI), Mahua Majhi of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), M A Baby of CPI(M) and E T Mohammed Basheer of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
