Renowned intellectual property (IP) lawyer Nakul Sharedalal attributes India’s rise in the Global Innovation Index over the last ten years to the combined efforts of the industry stakeholders and the government.

Since 2015, Dr. Sharedalal has served as the chairman of the Gujarat Council of Assocham, a prominent trade association,’s IPR Committee. Throughout the years, he has been instrumental in fostering an innovative and intellectual property-aware culture in India by holding numerous talks, lectures, and collaborations with academic institutions, industry associations, MSMEs, and SMEs.

India came in at number 82 on the Global Innovation Index in 2013. But in 2024, it moved up to the 40th position.

Sharing his thoughts on the occasion of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day on April 26, Dr.Sharedalal said, “This is a big achievement. The nation witnessed a significant leap in the innovation landscape after the NDA government came to power in 2014. Collective efforts of government and industry in the form of the introduction of new policies, automation of systems, increased digital adoption, greater awareness, an increased focus on intellectual property rights (IPR), and support for researchers and innovators, have contributed to building a thriving and supportive ecosystem and collectively propelled India’s innovation index.”

Celebrated on April 26 every year since 2000, World IP Day serves as a reminder of the value of intellectual property in fostering innovation and creativity while also honouring the achievements made by innovators and creators worldwide. The theme for this year was “Sustainable Development Goals: Building our common future with innovation and creativity,” which emphasises how important intellectual property is to the advancement of sustainable development initiatives.

There is an increasing need for creative solutions as the globe deals with complex issues like social inequality and environmental degradation. The opportunity to investigate how intellectual property may spur the inventive and creative solutions necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is presented by World IP Day in 2024.

Dr. Sharedalal said, “To build our common future and achieve sustainable development goals, we need to rethink how we live, work and play, and use all the tools available to us, especially our ingenuity and intellectual property. It is the need of the hour to harness the power of innovation and creativity to come up with green and eco-friendly products and sustainable materials to create a sustainable, balanced and brighter future for everyone, everywhere.”
