India batter Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, along with Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza, have been shortlisted for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for September after stellar performances in the white-ball format.
The three cricketers enjoyed rich campaigns in the month, with Sharma chipping in with a record-breaking century in T20I, Gill hitting a historic double-century in ODI and Raza playing crucial roles with both bat and ball against Australia.
Abhishek Sharma’s Record-Breaking T20IShow
Abhishek Sharma was in sublime form as India faced Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series. The right-handed batter scored 229 runs at an astonishing average of 76.33.
He kicked off the campaign in Delhi with a sparkling 82 off 32 balls, which included a fifty in just 22 deliveries. Sharma followed it in the second T20I with another 39, before scripting the innings of his life in the third match.
Abhishek cracked a sensational hundred in the third T20I against the Afghans. He remained unbeaten on 108 off just 45 balls, which included 11 sixes. Sharma bettered the previous record of a Full Member batter when he raced to a century in only 30 balls.
The left-hander also registered two Player of the Match awards and a Player of the Series honor as he climbed up the rankings to become the No. 2 T20I batter.
Shubman Gill’s Historic Double Century
Shubman Gill was in consistent form throughout the month as India took on the West Indies in a five-match ODI series. The No. 1 ODI batter and India skipper scored 110 in the opening match in Thiruvananthapuram.
Gill then delivered the performance of his career in the third match at Guwahati. Chasing down 406, India reached the target in 43.3 overs with the opener remaining not out on 223 off 133 balls.
Gill struck 26 fours and eight sixes in his unbeaten knock, which included a century in 62 balls and a double-century in 117 deliveries. His unbeaten 223 is the highest individual score in a successful ODI run-chase.
Sikandar Raza’s All-Round Display
Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza was shortlisted after a rich series against Australia. He kicked off the ODI series with 57 in the opening match, and then pulled off a vital 98-run stand with Craig Ervine.
Raza followed it in the second match with 45, before registering an unbeaten 81 off 72 balls in the decider. He also claimed the wickets of Oliver Peake and Josh Inglis with the ball.
Though Zimbabwe lost the series, Raza played key roles with both bat and ball, and he is regarded as a crucial middle-order hitter
