Pollard Vows to Put Fearlessness Back into Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians new head coach Kieron Pollard.

Pollard, appointed as head coach for the five-time IPL champions, is ready to add some fire to the Mumbai Indians. The former West Indies all-rounders have promised to bring the fearlessness back to the side after a disappointing few seasons by focusing on working harder, being disciplined and having team spirit.

“It’s pretty surreal to lead an organization I’ve been involved in a lot through my career. I’ve been with the team for around 15 years in various roles and now I want to help bring that mentality back to the side so they can be one of the most successful teams in T20 history.”

‘We Want to See the Blue Flag Up’

Although the Mumbai Indians have failed to perform how they should have in recent seasons Pollard believes they need to start from the bottom up and understand what the franchise is all about.

The blue Mumbai Indians flag at Wankhede Stadium needs to be flying high to represent how passionate and fighting the players are.

Pollard believes there are a few simple things that need to happen in the dressing room. Work harder, be disciplined, respect your team-mates and play for the badge. All of these values are key when a team is under pressure.

Learning From Mahela Jayawardene and Others

Pollard has also thanked Mahela Jayawardene for helping him understand the tactical side of cricket. He has worked with the former Sri Lankan star as a player, assistant coach and batting coach. Pollard learned a lot from him about how to prepare, plan and manage people.

Pollard also credits Robin Singh for his tireless work ethic and Phil Simmons for keeping calm allowing players to play freely. He believes knowing each individual’s personality is key to creating a successful team.

Using Data but Also Instincts

Pollard recognizes how fast T20 cricket has developed. He believes coaches need to strike a balance between using data and trusting a player’s instincts. Although data can help players prepare better you can’t make cricket too robotic.

Pollard also wants players to play with their personality and not be afraid to fail. Mistakes are going to happen but it’s about having the guts to make positive decisions and learning from the result.

Message to Mumbai Indians Paltan

Pollard recognizes how loyal the Mumbai Indians fans are and promised to work hard to get the excitement back.

“We’ve got to start with unity, playing freely and fearlessly. It’s now about delivering and giving the Paltan something to cheer about.“
