WHAT IS THE WORLD MUSIC DAY?

Music is celebrated across the world as a universal language that transcends languages and cultures. Zealously and traditionally called the “Fête de la Musique”, World Music Day is an annual festival celebrated globally on June 21 to commemorate and promote music from all around the world. This year, the festival was observed on a Friday.

“MUSIC ON THE INTERVENTIONS”

On this day, many artists and musicians from across the world, professional and amateur, come together to express and showcase their musical talents and passion. World Music Day aims to encourage individuals to pursue and promote the power of music. Last year’s theme (2023) for the festival – “Music on the Intersections” proved to be a success.

HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL DATES BACK IN 1981

The concept of “Fête de la Musique” originally came from France, in 1981. On that day, Jack Lang, the French Ministry of Culture, along with music composer Maurice Fleuret and a radio producer and journalist, decided to have a day dedicated to celebrating music worldwide. Following this, the first Fête de la Musique was held in Paris in 1982, with over 1000 musicians performing at the festival.

120 COUNTRIES COMMEMORATE THE FESTIVAL

Since this establishment, around 700 cities across 120 countries celebrate World Music Day every year to promote unity and inclusivity through the universal language of music. In these cities, the festival is celebrated through many concerts, musical shows, and live performances.
